Behind The Lens

Location

In my small basement studio in downtown Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA.

Time

It was on a Saturday afternoon, but all light was provided by my strobes as my studio has no window.

Lighting

I used a single Vision 4 battery powered strobe with a 9"x24" strip box in the Paramount position (directly above camera) using a Savage Boom. I also used a small silver umbrella below for additional fill under the chin and to push the eyes forward in the exposure.

Equipment

Camera Used: Fuji X100F with TCL teleconverter. Lighting: Vision 4 battery powered monoblock.

Inspiration

The model, Jaycee, is a true beauty and I wanted to shoot a simple classic full fill portrait that showcased her beauty and her striking eyes. Jaycee is an international level promotional model for Monster Energy and high quality beauty headshots are always a must for her work.

Editing

The portrait was edited first in Lightroom and then fine tuned in Photoshop. Light edits made for basic cleanup, sharpening and skin color correction.

In my camera bag

My Fuji X100F is my daily carry. I also shoot with a Nikon D800 for certain images that need a much larger image and bit depth. My other go to cameras are: 1959 Yashica Model A twin lens medium format camera, Zero Image 2000 medium format pinhole camera, Zero Image 45 4x5 large format pinhole camera, Ranica Viasna 8x10 pinhole camera and various Holga medium format cameras.

Feedback

Simplicity. Jaycee is even more beautiful in person than this image can possibly show. Do not overthink it. The image is about her, not me or my lighting. That is what makes the best fashion and editorial photographers shine through, they know when to let the talent carry the day.
