Behind The Lens

Location

Ganges Harbour on the Salish Sea is the main hub of life on tiny Salt Spring Island just off the coast of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

Time

I made this particular photo very close to dawn when the sun was still obscured by low clouds and fog

Lighting

The foggy, calm conditions blanketed this composition in beautiful, subdued, perfectly even light so that I could maintain details in the shadows as well as the highlights

Equipment

I used one of my Rolleiflex K4A automats that comes equipped with Zeiss Tesar 3.5 lens. Kodak Portra 400 allowed me the freedom to work hand-held in the low early morning light

Inspiration

The perfectly calm sea at slack tide presented a great opportunity to capture perfect reflections of the iconic Seahorse tugboat and sacred burial site Grace Islet

Editing

There is minimal work done in post to achieve the look I wanted in the final image. I chose the film type because of its properties, especially colour balance and contrast, so that I could finish the photo in camera

In my camera bag

A Nikon D7100 with a Nikon 18-200mm lens Nikon D7200 with a Nikon 200-500mm Two Rolleiflex K4A cameras: one with Tri-x 400 or Ilford HP5, the other with Portra 400 A Zeiss Super Ikonta 531/2 6x9 rangefinder with expired Agfa Vario or expired Kodak Tri-X 400 A Horseman VH with 6x7 and 6x9 backs, a 65, 105, 150, and 180mm lens; Fuji Acros, Kodak Portra 160 and Ilford FP4 Nikon F3 with Nikkor 35mm f2 Nikon FM with Nikkor 24mm f2.8 Nikon F3HP with Nikkor 50mm f1.4 Basically, I match my equipment to my mood, subject and the prevailing weather conditions

Feedback

Check tide tables and weather forecasts to determine if conditions will cooperate to produce a perfectly flat, calm surface
