Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken near the village of Volytsia in the Kyiv region (Ukraine). There are large sunflower fields along the highway, which are easily accessible by car.

Time

I had to photograph a field of sunflowers in daylight. I wanted a nice contrast between the bright blue sky and the yellow sunflowers. But it so happened that I found a suitable field only shortly before evening. I managed to take the right photo, and then decided to wait another hour until the sun goes down. And I did not regret it. Because the sunflowers looked stunning in the evening light. I took this picture on August 1, 2020 at 20:23.

Lighting

I like to shoot in backlight, especially at sunset. This photo was also taken in natural evening light without additional lighting. At this time, the sunflower flowers turned a beautiful yellow hot color, and sunlight began to shine through their petals.

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon D750 with an 24-120 mm f/4 lens. No other equipment was involved.

Inspiration

Usually almost all sunflowers in the field look in one direction. But my attention was drawn to one large sunflower on the edge of the field, which was turned in the other direction. Its petals shone like the rays of the sun! I chose the angle so that the sun appeared in the frame next to the sunflower flower and took a picture.

Editing

This photo was shooting in RAW in standard camera mode. Then edited in Adobe Camera RAW: basic correction exposure, shadows / highlights and added a little more vibrance. Nothing more.

In my camera bag

Nikon D750 with an 24-120 mm lens. Sometimes my old Nikon D300s with the lens 16-85 mm or 35 mm as well.

Feedback

Sometimes it is worth staying for a few hours at the shooting location to take pictures here at a different time and with different lighting. The result may impress you. Look for something different in the middle of a monotonous scene. Watch the light and be patient.
