The moon rise just past the horizon in the clear skies of Greenland created a very colorful moon. As I was shooting from the deck of a sailing vessel, I could appreciate how the blue of the icebergs set off the orange, yellow and red of the moon, with no stars yet visible to distract from the intensity.Time
After a full day of shooting and sailing, we were enjoying the blue hour, just relaxing on deck. Then this powerful beacon rose above the horizon and you had a bevy of photographers scrambling to get as many recorded memories of this beautiful sight.Lighting
As the sun was going down behind us, the moon was rising in front of us. Being this far north near the North Pole produces some unique situations of daylight into the late evening hours. This lighting was all done by Mother Nature and Gd.Equipment
I was shooting handheld with my Nikon D850 and had the 24-70mm lens still on from the afternoon of shooting the icebergs.Inspiration
Who wouldn't be inspired by this clear image of the valleys of the moon, defined bt color variations, set of by the blue hue of the sky, and another wonderful blue spectrum of the ice?Editing
I process in Lightroom and often push the saturation and clarity. For this image, I probably did both, but it really didn't need much in the way of processing. In my camera bag
For travel photography workshops, I take two Nikon camera bodies-my D850 and my D810. I usually have a 24-70mm on one body, and a 70-200 on the other. I also bring a wide angle lens and then the usual cleaners, weather protectors and my Vello wired remote switch, all in my ThinkTank rolling camera bag. I usually do not travel with a tripod, as I try to minimize the equipment weight.Feedback
Sailing around the coast of Greenland is a unique experience. It affords you ample opportunities to capture the beauty of the Arctic scenery, all while living aboard a sailing ship. The adrenilin of the adventure only adds to the excitment of the shooting in this beautiful, mystical place.
