The photo was made in my studio. I have a basic setup for the lighting for portraits and more, but for this photo, everything had to be reversed and it has been a little challenge. In the end, I did get the image I was looking for.Time
Being in a studio, the time of day is not really relevant, is it? If it is, the photo was taken between 4 and 5 pm.Lighting
As I am looking for the face of the maiko in the mirror, I need to set the light for the face toward the camera. But I do not want to have it appear in the frame. In other words, I need to be pretty precise in the way I set the light toward her face, and a second light for the whole scene.Equipment
I used my trusted Nikon D850 with my go-to lens, the 70-200 f/2.8 zoom (set at 70 mm). For this photo, I used a tripod and two flashes, one for the face and another one for the ambient light.Inspiration
I had such an image in my head for a while and as we had some extra time after a photo session, I decided to give it a try. The idea was to create a large negative space and concentrate on the image of her face reflected in the mirror. The main issue I had was to get the way shed looked as I wanted.Editing
All the post-processing was done in Lightroom. This included cropping, balancing the tone, and some dodging and burning. I ended up with a stringer than usual (for me) vignette. In my camera bag
I have everything I own in my studio, but for 90% of my photos, I use the same basic set of gears, namely my Nikon D850 and either the 70-200 mm f/2.8 zoom or the 24-70 mm f/2.8 zoom. I also often use prime lenses such as 24 mm f/1.4, 85 mm f/1.4, etc. In the studio, I have two studio flashes and various lightboxes.Feedback
In the studio, one can create any image one wants. So, the important thing is to know what we want, to have a vision. After, it's only a matter of technic to be applied to create and make the image.
