Behind The Lens

Location

These wild poppies pop up in my backyard in the grass, every summer. They are delighful and I think are the remaining flowers from the previous owner spreading wildflower seeds into here grassy area. These are always a delight when they arrive and bloom and make me smile when I see them. the bloom for less than 48 hours so I have to be quick in getting any photos

Time

This was taken in late afternoon in quite bright sun. The fact that were 2 flowers side by side was a gift and the are typically solitary. The wind was blowing making the flowers nod back and forth and it looks as of they were smiling.

Lighting

The bright sunlight was a challenge but I always shoot in manual so adjusted my !SO down low and set my aperture open enough to catch the close texture of the flow heads. So this meant I needed to use a high shutter speed to capture the flowers in a stop position. It worked. I did this in one quick set-up and session. It was fun.

Equipment

Nikon D800 with a AF-S Micro Nikkor 85mm 1:35G ED lens. As this is a lens for smaller sensor cameras and my D800 is a full sensor camera, I get this shadow around the endges of the image. I use this ot my advantage in framing and composing my image. Sometines I choose to leave parts of the dark edges in the final image as it adds a layered look and a vignette look if used properly. This also means I am up close to get the depth and detail of the flower I am photographying.

Inspiration

These poppies are such and inspiration as they keep on growing and blooming even though they are in dense grass areas. When they flower they are just delighful to watch as the sway in the breeze on their slim white stems. I just love them and look forward to their arrival in mid to late summer.

Editing

I did some cropping and used the shadows bar to bring out some of the darker detail. I also reduced the exposure a bit as they were so bright in the sunlight. But there wasn't any wash out on the right of the histogram so I didn't loose any of the image due to overexposure.

In my camera bag

I carry a light bag as I am not aloud to lift anything heavier that 10 lbs du to a health issue. So my bag has my cammer and the lens mentione above plus my Nikon AF-S Nikkor 85mm 1:1.4G lens. Otherwise I carry a lenas cleaning brush and cloth. I always use a tripod as I have a hand shake. Then I take a snack and liquids to drink if I am going t be away for the day.

Feedback

Patience. I watcheed this subject over several weeks before this unigue situation presented itself. You need to learn about you subject so that you can catch just the right moments to take your photo. With shooting still life outdoors you need to observe how the natural light in the area that you photograph over a 24 hour period if posssible so you know the best time the approach your subject, say a flower of interest, and determine when is the best time of day to get the image you want. It is very satisfying when you do the whole process. To me it's like setting up the easle for a painting and then the lighting, after you have studied your prospective subject and kmow what you want to caputre on the canvass.
