This photo was taken in Puerto Vallarta Mexico in the the Bay of Banderas during the Humpback whale mating season. This was on a whale watching photo tour.Time
It was late morning with a high thin overcast of clouds.Lighting
I would have liked less overcast of the clouds and a little less haze in the air. But all in all you have to take what you are given and work with it.Equipment
I was using my Nikon D7500 with a nikkor 80-400mm zoom. At the time the camera was a new purchase and really the first time I was able to put it to the test.Inspiration
There really wasn't an inspiration. We were on a whale watching tour and I was going to shoot whatever we were able to see. We had just witnessed an amazing double breach and honestly I could have called that experience a major success and called it a day. But on this day the boys were active. This was just one over multiple breaches as several bulls were fighting to the attention of a lady.Editing
I cleaned it up in LightRoom. In my camera bag
I currently carry a Nikon D7500 and D7200 with an assortment of lenses.Feedback
My wife and I have participated in several whale watching tours in the Pacific. When I went on one in Hawaii there was a gentleman on the boat that is a professional whale photographer. He gave me a few pointers on how to get a good shot. But the most important one for this kind of experience was always be ready. While there is some level of predictability in the whale behavior you simply don't know what may happen next and where it may happen. On this particular day the whales were active so they gave me several opportunities to load up a massive amount of images on my memory card.
