Location
This photo was taken at Kickapoo Ponies in North Texas.Time
This particular photo was taken about 9 am on a crisp and cool pretty much cloudless day.Lighting
I was lucky in that I was shooting with decent light. It wasn't yet too harsh as it was early spring.Equipment
I used a Canon 40D with a 135mm lens. Had my camera set on the Sports setting as horses tends to move even when they are standing still.Inspiration
I was taking photos for the Kickapoo Ponies website to introduce their new stallion. He is such a sweetheart and has a really nice head. I wanted to capture his focused eye and pretty head.Editing
I tweaked it a little in the mid-tones in the Adobe Photo Shop Elements 12 Lighten and Darken section. Sine he is black it is necessary to tweak those settings so the horse doesn't look too flat. Same is true for a white or sometimes a gray horse. In my camera bag
I normally carry my 40D and now my 70D with a 135 mm and a 300 mm lens. Always have extra batteries and sd cards.Feedback
Lots and lots of patience. You can get a picture of a horse's head but to get that special look you have to take many photos and move around a lot. You can very rarely take a complete head on shot or some angles as the nose/nostrils will appear huge in comparison to the rest of the head. You have to keep moving and taking multiple pictures. There are tricky angles that can distort the image and each horse can be different. It's all about proportions when photographing equines.
