Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Kickapoo Ponies in North Texas.

Time

I took this photo mid-morning.

Lighting

It was a clear, cool day in the middle of the morning. It was one of those 'crisp' days Texans love.

Equipment

I used a Canon 40D with a 75-300mm AF lens with the rapid fire Sports setting.

Inspiration

This is a new stallion for Kickapoo Ponies and I wanted to get action shots of him running around his paddock. He was flirting with some mares so I knew I could get some super focused head shots.

Editing

No post-processing with this photo other than to check for crispness of the face. I did do it in a B&W and a sepia just for fun.

In my camera bag

I always have my 75-300 lens and my 28-135 mm. I sometimes carry a macro and an 18-55mm lens. I always have a tripod handy...just in case. When I'm out in the pastures or paddocks I will use the fence or a tree to steady the camera.

Feedback

Action shots are hard. Action shots of horses will make you cross your eyes sometimes. It is hard to always keep them in focus as they are always in motion. I take a gazillion photos as fast as I can when they are moving around. Even if they are standing still they are still 'moving'. Their eyes, their ears, their nostrils. I always take several in a row...even if the horse is quietly standing. Sometimes that can make the difference between them 'looking' and them being focused and 'looking'. There is a special 'look' I'm shooting for. Fence posts and trees and even stumps can be used as a tripod versus having to cart a bag with an extra lens, extra batteries and sd cards. Patience is required. Lots of patience.
