Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at Babcock State Park in West Virginia.

Time

The picture was taken about 3 PM.

Lighting

This was an overcast day which allowed for getting a much more even lighting on the area. When the sun is shining brightly, there is too much contrast between the light and shadowed areas to make the shot come out looking fairly even.

Equipment

The camera was a Pentax K 50 using an 18-250 mm zoom lens, mounted on a tripod to allow for a little longer exposure time.

Inspiration

I am a fan of old time grist mills. At the time, my son lived in Mass. and I would try to visit him each year, in the fall, when my granddaughter's birthday is. So I had searched the internet for possible mill sites that were on the way back from his home. I had seen shot of the mill, so I picked it as the one to try to see on the trip. This was actually the third year to to for pictures, since the light was not right on the other trips.

Editing

Post processing was done using Topaz Adjust and Topaz Sharpen to lighten up the shot so that it looked like the scene that I saw while there.

In my camera bag

At this time I primarily use a Pentax K-70 with a Pentax K-50 as a backup camera. I normally use a Sigma 17-70 lens or a Pentax 17-270 zoom lens. I keep a circular polarizer an a uv filter for each of them, to use as needed. I also use ND filters for waterfalls. While not in my bag, I try to have a tripod with me. If going for bird pictures, I have a Sigma 50-500 mm zoom, but with its weight, only use it for special occasions.

Feedback

Since I do not often have time to spend days trying for a shot, as with this one, be willing to keep coming back trying for the shot that you want. At least for me, I do not always get the shot that I want and have to return at other times. Not one of my main virtues, patience and the willingness to keep trying at different times is required. Frustration does not seem to make good pictures.
