Behind The Lens

Location

At Splash Point Photo - my studio space in North Wales, UK! The pool at this point wasn't actually ready to go and was still being serviced and reconditioned, but I wanted some images to suggest what was to come from the location while I was building the studio space up so I could start profiles for social media, networking sites and the likes.

Time

This was probably mid-afternoon in the summer.

Lighting

It was a long time ago, but i'm pretty sure it was all window light. I did have a couple of LED ring lights and wands knocking around at this point too, so it's possible I used them for a little fill light, but looking at how bright the pool room is, if I was a betting man i'd say it was all window light!

Equipment

Canon 5d mk3 & 24-70L

Inspiration

As suggested I was building a unique space of where I was hoping to have something to show early on about its process, and equally I was hoping the pool would play a large part eventually, so along with the area down the road being known as Splash Point because of how the sea hits the rocks, I was playing on the water theme for the branding of the new venture.

Editing

Probably the standard portrait processing with contrast and clean up tweaks. I think the biggest manipulation was warming the legs up a little and adding back some redish tones, because when surrounded by that many blue tiles, it's inevitable the shadow areas will really take on the colour casts of their surrounds. I like realistic images unless i'm doing something completely off the wall and purposefully illustrative, which is rare, so it's just a lot of little tweaks that improve the image without ever making it seem fake.

In my camera bag

That depends what i'm shooting! I did a 10k run the other week and had my 5d mk3, 70-200L, 17-40L, underwater case (it was hammering it down), tripod and a light stand and clamp my go pro for video! Typically, for portraiture, all the above depending on where i'm shooting and what, alongside maybe a 24-70L and 85mm 1.8.

Feedback

It really was just limited given the pool was out of action, and we were using any available means of lighting. I love strobes because you dictate the narrative and light accordingly and i much prefer having a creative aim than just shooting nice images, but now and then you've just gota rock out and use what is available if you have nothing special in mind for the lighting narrative.
