Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken on the Island Kefalonia, Greece, close to Capital Argostoli. Besides driving, It took a long walk to get to this small beach, but it was worth it.

Time

It was just before noon. It gets too hot in the afternoon. Siesta is still practiced in some areas of Greece.

Lighting

Greece is the hardest place to take pictures because of the brightness of the sun. For best results photography has to be scheduled otherwise regardless of how much filtering the pictures will be whitened out.

Equipment

This is an old camera, but with great resolution. Kowa H is a 35mm SLR with a fixed lens and leaf shutter. 48mm f/2.8 lens (4 elements in 3 groups), Seikosha GLA shutter with speed from 1/30 to 1/300 second.

Inspiration

The non-polluted beach with beautiful colors of blue. The natural rock formations with overlapping greenery. A secluded virgin area that few visit. The hammock isn't always there, but was put there for my purpose.

Editing

The camera itself has an adjusting exposure meter indicator that helps. I don't take a lot of pictures, but focus on the angle to capture a balanced scenario. As an artist that can't stay outside for long periods of time in some locations, I take a picture to paint later. Sometimes a photograph is best as is.

In my camera bag

A tripod is great, but I generally do not carry and depend on steadiness. I do have several cameras though and usually choose which one to use.

Feedback

Depending on where you are on earth when taking a picture makes a great difference. Still the time of day will emphasize the composition. In Greece it is best to not take any pictures when it is the hottest and brightest time of the day. Capturing shadows, early morning clouds, and sundown scenic compositions will always add to the drama and beauty. Besides this you want to angle and frame your photo in a balanced manner, rather than just center your subject.
