Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a beach called "The Long Beach" which is lengthy and narrow in comparison the the main beach in the island Kefalonia, Argostoli, Greece. The artist friend in the bathing suite Diana Andonakatou, who was staying at her sisters summer house at left bearing a few yards of stairs upright within the cliff. She just came out from a casual swim.

Time

This was in the evening as the sun was setting and when all had left the beach.

Lighting

In Greece it is very hot and bright. One can only plan to take pictures otherwise filters have to be used and still you will not be able to take a true colorful picture without it being whited out. Since I was staying for several days I had the opportunity to capture the silhouette of my friends with the sun uninterrupted and glowing.

Equipment

Kowa 48mm slide or camera w/flash, 1:28 f=48mm. This is a vintage camera that I still have and find great resolution with. You can either set it yourself or just use it in Automatic and balance the resolution. It is heavy enough to not require a tripod, but everything must be converted for computer use. There is also no zoom. There are so many conveniences in digital cameras today and they are getting better within cell phones, but one must notice the pixels. It must be 17px and over otherwise no matter what the features it will be hard to get that detail resolution.

Inspiration

The quite and serene landscape at the time. Most of all I wanted to the sun to show as round as possible with rays coming through the silhouette of the figures. I know that most photographers will take several pictures of the subject(s) and composition they've projected, but I usually take just one, and this was it. I must say that I discussed what I wanted, and posed the figures a little so I can get the sun rays to glow.

Editing

No post-processing wasn't necessary for this at this time of day.

In my camera bag

For this camera there's a flash addon which wasn't necessary.

Feedback

True pictures require the right time in order to capture an artistic emotion. As a fine and all round artist I mostly take pictures to study them rather than copy, or display. The best photographs are with the least enhancements. Cropping the photograph when in a rush to improve the composition is fine. I captured the sun rays at the top of the figures, but would have liked the silhouettes to be even more prominent with the rays coming through their legs as well. Again, this was a one shot even though it was planned.
