Behind The Lens

Location

I live on the biggest nature area of the Netherlands, clled 'The Veluwe'. It contains forests, heathlands and sand drifts. This photo was shot on only 5 minutes from my home near a small village in the forest call 'Hoog Soeren'.

Time

It was on my birthday the 15the of Februari. I had a day off from work. The whole day it was grey weather and snowing. It was not freezing so the snow did not last in the city. At the end of the day the sky was clearing and the sun appeared. From my window I saw some fog forming when the sun hit the melting snow. Immediately I grabbed my camera bag and jumped in the car to go to the forest. I know a nice beech forest only 5 minutes drive from my home. I had to hurry as the sun was setting soon. A soon as I arrived I saw the atmosphere was even more beautiful then I expected to see.

Lighting

When it is foggy and with backlight of the sun magical sunrays will appear. The white carpet of the snow and some young beech trees with there red/brown leaves are adding to the magical atmosphere.

Equipment

I used the Sony SLT-A99V camera with a Tamron 24-70mm 2.8 lens on f11 and 1/20sec shutterspeed and I used a tripod.

Inspiration

I am getting restless and have to go out and do some landscape shots when there are atmospheric weather conditions. Unfortunately most of those days I am at work and not able to go out. But this day I had a day off.

Editing

The post processing contains white balance and high light correction with Capture One software. Nothing is added to the photo.

In my camera bag

Full frame camera, wide angle zoom lens and one specific lens for special purpose, like macro lens or zoom lens. I always take my tripod with me.

Feedback

To capture atmospheric landscapes with sunrays be sure there is some light fog where the sun is breaking through. You need to take the picture towards the sun and let the sun light break by the trees. Try not to get to much sun directly into the lens, but try to cover it a bit behind a tree.
