Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a horse ranch and training center, in a rural part of North Texas.

Time

As I recall, it was early afternoon and the sun was still fairly high in the sky.

Lighting

The sky was clear and the sun bright, creating contrast, accentuating the white of the horse's face.

Equipment

I shot this image with my Canon EOS Rebel SL1, fitted with a Canon F4.0, 75-300mm telephoto lens, and skylight filter. No other equipment was used. Exposure: ISO 125; Shutter 1-1250; Aperture 4.5; Focal length 110mm.

Inspiration

I was at the ranch photographing a dressage competition. In between rounds, I decided to explore the property to see what else I could find of interest. I rounded the corner of the barn and saw this guy looking at me as if in anticipation of a treat. I smiled, rubbed his nose and ears, and then wandered away. Walking away, I glanced back and noticed he was still looking at me. I loved the way his head was poking out of the window and couldn't resist taking a few photos. Every time I clicked the shutter, the horse's ears perked up and twitched toward me. Perfect!

Editing

I didn't do much in the way of post-processing. I liked the image overall and after a quick crop, I liked it even better. Yet the blue sky in the background and the brown tones of the painted buildings I found distracting, so I converted the image to B&W. Much better! I made a slight tweak in a curves layer which added some contrast, highlighting the whites of his face and bringing out some detail in his mane. That's it, finished!

In my camera bag

I carry a Canon EOS Rebel SL1, which is ultra-light and great for hiking. Lenses include a Canon EF-S F3.5 18-55mm, and a Canon EF-S F4.0 75-300mm. These are basically kit lenses but suit my needs just fine... For now :) Filters: Circular polarizer; a set of close-up filters, and a set of neutral density filters. Miscellaneous: Two spare camera batteries and wall/car chargers, external flash unit, two flashlights w/ spare batteries, swiss army knife, small first aid kit, travel-size mylar emergency blanket, lighter, emergency whistle, compass, sunscreen lotion.

Feedback

Don't be afraid to explore, and explore more (ask permission if necessary ). Change vantage points often until you find the right spot; Moving a few feet can make a big difference in composition. Pay attention to the lighting, adjust for the circumstances, and/or be patient and wait for the light to change (come back later if possible). Experiment with angles, composition, and technique. Shoot like crazy! Never give up! Above all... Have Fun !!!
