Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken near Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

Time

The photo was taken around 6:00 P.M. in mid February, 2017.

Lighting

We were booked on a sunset cruise and knew I would be capturing images looking into the setting sun. I had both my main camera and backup camera set up in advance to capture the best images possible.

Equipment

The photo was taken with a Nikon Coolpix S3500 which is my backup camera. I had run out of battery on my regular camera and pulled out this pocket camera. The camera was hand held while capturing the images.

Inspiration

My wife and I were vacationing in Cabo for my birthday and booked a sunset cruise on a catamaran style boat. Another tour service in Cabo used pirate ship styled boats for their tours. As we were watching the sunset I noticed the pirate ship was on course to pass between us and the setting sun. I was able to position myself to capture several images.

Editing

Post processing this image consisted of improving color saturation and contrast.

In my camera bag

Canon 80D and two lenses, my backup Nikon Coolpix S3500, polarizing and ND filters, spare battery and charger and camera/lens care accessories.

Feedback

Anticipate the movement of an object take several images, starting early along the object's path and continue capturing images well after the object passed the sun..
