Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Grist Mill in Sudbury, MA

Time

This photo was taken on October 22, 2016 at around 3:30pm.

Lighting

I wanted to capture the late afternoon sunlight to express the golden light. Although this side of the mill is situated in the shadow, you can still see the golden sunlight casting on the trees in late Fall as well as keeping good details in the shadows.

Equipment

I use a Nikon D610 with a 24-85 Nikon Lens at 24mm, 1.6sec at f/22, ISO100

Inspiration

I was inspired by the beauty of the place, the water fall that turned the big red mill wheel. I just wanted to capture that amazing scenery of the old mill and the accended red wheel. I planned to express the water flow and the wheel rotation movement with slow exposure which resulted in showing the motion blur of the moving elements.

Editing

I adjusted the highlights and shadows in Lightroom to bring more detail in he shadows and get more definition in the highlights. I also added a bit more saturation but, just enough not to overwhelm the colors.

In my camera bag

Now a days, I shoot with Nikon Z6, and cary some of my native Nikkor F mount lenses which include from very wide angle all the way to 75-300mm lenses.

Feedback

My main advice is to always find good lighting either early in the morning or around golden hour and always try to express the motion blur of moving elements with a slow shutter speed.
