Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in an neighborhood area of Portland, Oregon called Hollywood.

Time

This is one of my personal favorites. The photo was taken at about 7:00 AM on Veterans Day. I had been walking around talking to the soldiers and looking at the vehicles that were going to participate in the local Veterans Day Parade when he caught my eye. His smile and laugh was just so contagious.

Lighting

I decided early morning, natural like and shoot in B&W would do the trick to add some drama. My camera was hand held as there was no room for tripods between the participants, spectators and vehicles.

Equipment

This was shoot with a Nikon D5300 with my favorite, go every where I go, Nikon AF?S DX Nikkor 18?300mm lens.

Inspiration

I had been watching him from a distance and just couldn't resist his smile and laugh. So I purposely set out to talk to him and snap a few photos of him.

Editing

The only post-processing that was done was a small amount of cropping to ensure I filled as much of the frame with his face/smile as I could.

In my camera bag

Nikon D5300 with my favorites, Nikon AF?S DX Nikkor 18?300mm lens, Rokinon TSL24M-N 24mm f/3.5 Tilt Shift Lens and Nikon AF-S FX NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G Lens.

Watch for the smiles - the one that makes you feel good deep down. Don't snap a photo from a distance, make time to speak to your model, even if its just for a moment. Have fun with it.
