What a wonderful photograph! It's outstanding in so many different ways--the composition, detail, color, and, not least, the "I'm having a bad hair day bird." Congratulations on your awards.

That is A GREAT CAPTURE! I shot seams on our Lake Wendouree at Ballarat, Australia. Getting a really good pose and background and light takes patience. We'll done!

Location
This photo was taken at one of my favourite places for bird photography at Lake Kerkini in northern Greece.Time
In winter the light on the lake can be spectacular at dawn and dusk.. this one was taken literally a couple of minutes before dawn when the light is still blue but getting brighter.Lighting
The light as I mentioned above in this photo was a few minutes pre dawn and so has the brightness to give a decent exposure but with the softness still of the blue hour before dawn.Equipment
Canon EoS 5DIII Canon 300mm f2.8 Monopod No flashInspiration
I absolutely adore these pelicans. They have so much character and seem to me to be prehistoric. Always when photographing these and other wildlife I will go out before dawn to a location I have already scouted and wait for the light to happen.Editing
On this particular image I needed practically no post processing other than to bring the colours out of the raw file..In my camera bag
Depends on what I’m heading out to photograph. When photographing wildlife I will normally have my 5DIV with 500mm f4 attached plus my 24-70 and 70-200mm lenses, a 1.4 teleconverter, Plenty of cards and plenty of batteries.Feedback
Wildlife photography is about planning and luck..! Research your subject, know it’s habits and movements then put yourself in the right position at the right time of day to give yourself the best chance of firstly spotting the animal you’re after and secondly getting a good image of it.
