Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken out on Stampede reservoir in Northern California during a warm winter day. Kevin Sloane is flying his super cub out over the lake and having fun fishing, touching down, and landing on the islands as he called it its the dirt bike of the skys!

Time

Kevin and I met at the airport at 8 am to fly out to stampede reservoir and take photos of his plane, it was a simple 20min flight out and after a few minutes of spotting we landed on an island and I got out to take photos. Kevin then spent the next hr doing a veridy of flybys and touchdowns!

Lighting

The lighting was key for getting a good reflection off of the water. Being that it was still winter the light stayed low during the day helping us get the best shot. I kept my shutter low as to get the rolling shutter effect while still getting the plane to appear still.

Equipment

This was shot on the Canon 5D MIV on the 16-35mm no other equipment.

Inspiration

The pilot Kevin liked my work from Instagram and reached out about doing a shoot for fun and as I am an aviator myself I was very interested to do an off-road type of shoot but with a plane.

Editing

Yes, this was shot in canon raw and then processed in lightroom, I lifted the shadows and did a bit of sharpening.

In my camera bag

My bag is full of goodies, its rather large and waterproof so I trust it! I have my Sony fs5 in the brain, 5D MIV, in the bag with a 16mm-35mm, 24mm-70mm, 50mm, and a 70mm-200mm last I have my Mavic 2 pro in the side bag. Just about everything you could need!

Feedback

Find a good pilot you feel safe with and be familiar with the rolling shutter technique.
