Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was shot at Seacliff Bridge in the south coast of News South Wales, Australia. I am an amateur photographer from Sydney and there is still lots more for me to learn and experience.

Time

Gotta say waking up early around 5am in the morning is pretty tough but when you get the shot it is all the more rewarding. This photo was taken around an hour after sunrise at about 7am. My friend and I was sitting on the side of the cliff with very little space, the wind was strong that morning and every time a strong gust came I grabbed the tripod fearing it was going to fall.

Lighting

I went out intending to capture a sunrise with a more vibrant and violent sky with bursting colors and clouds rolling in but instead the situation gave me a photo different and unique. The lacking of clouds and the soft light that the sun radiated gave this feeling of serenity and peace. The fog on the water reflected the soft light and some what acted as a natural blur that drew your attention to the bridge.

Equipment

Minimal equipment was used to capture this photo. I used a Canon 5D Mark ii, a kit lens 24-105mm f/4 and a tripod.

Inspiration

This is one of my favorite places to go because it has an amazing view of the bridge. I had previously taken a photo of this bridge with a Sigma 24mm f/1.4 which turned out great but it left me dissatisfied because reviewing the photo it failed to capture the details of the bridge, it also had bush and branches on the side of the frame which was very annoying. This time I went out aiming to capture the details of the bridge the very curves and edges it offered.

Editing

Post-processing is a very important part of landscape photography because it allows you to fix up various tweaks here and there. This photo had the bare minimum, some simple contrast and exposure adjustments, fixed up the white balance and gave it a quick sharpen and vignette to finish the photo which was all done in Lightroom.

In my camera bag

Every time I would go out for any kind of photography I make sure I have the bare essentials which is my Canon 5D, 24-105mm and a tripod. Sometimes depending on the composition I would bring my Sigma 24mm or the 50mm. I always make sure my camera is fully charged and always I carry a spare battery. Sometimes I bring along my trigger trap for time lapses.

Feedback

Coming from an amateur photographer the best advice I can give is that you should always get there early enough to give you time to set up and carefully compose your shot or else you'll be rushed and miss the perfect opportunity. You don't want to get home and find that all of the photos you took weren't satisfactory and the day has gone to waste. "early is on time, on time is late, and late is unacceptable!" Eric Jerome Dickey.
