I love this photo! I worked at the GCRy for almost 10 years, and I was present on #29's "re-inauguration" (after years of sitting on a siding in Michigan). Well done, and congrats!

Behind The Lens

Location

I was on a trip Harley Davidson from Vegas to American canyons , Grand Canyon,Monument Valley,Arches,Bryce Canyon and Zion . We had a stop in the city of Williams . A wonderful town at 45 km from Flagstaff in Arizona . Williams remained in history as being the last city crossed by Route 66.The Grand Canyon Railway is a passenger railway which operates between Williams, Arizona and Grand Canyon National Park South Rim. It was created by the Sante Fe in 1901, and became part of the American railways class I. Santa Fe ceased the operation of the line in 1974.

Time

We made a stop at a restaurant in the city, it was about 1 pm and the Sun was at its zenith. Temperature extremely hot and blinding light.Difficult conditions for shooting a landscape with a light too white but perfect for this antique locomotive. The most important was to find the best angle of view in order to make this impression of metal mass while keeping the feeling of nostalgia for this old transport.

Lighting

The locomotive was perfectly light, which allowed to reveal many details of this enormous machine.

Equipment

Canon EOS 5D Mark II F8 ,1/125s iso 100 ,No flash and no tripod ( difficult to take too much material on a motocycle )

Inspiration

I couldn't hope to find a better subject. There is so much story around the American Railroad. Of the picturesque clichés of movies, western, adventure... the impression of walking in the middle of a legend. I immediately imagined life of the pioneers of the rail, difficulties to carry out such work. I wanted to give the best image so that it continues to dream.

Editing

I use post processing on lightroom . it was important to give "character" to this picture . Using exposure and structure .It was necessary also to rework the color to make it not too saturated and keep a small former look.

In my camera bag

Most of time I take only my camera, 2 batteriesand a light bag . A heavy bag is always a problem if you have to walk a lot .I take also my compact flash in spare.I only carried a tripod if necessary.,and another camera lens if I think I need it .I also have a wide angle , but I do not use it for the scenery, I think that too flattened image except of course in some cases.I still also have a notebook and a pen to take notes .I usually let my battery charger in the hotel , my extra batteries enough for the day. The goal , always limit the weight because of my back problem , if I walk too long with too heavy material it spoils my pleasure to photo.Il the need to feel free and comfortable to make good pictures. I still also have a small compact in spare in case of failure .In this case , I was on driving motocycle for 15 days and couldn't take too much material with me . Just minimum.

Feedback

There is not really advice for capturing this type of image, just to have the chance to find this type of wonder and the right angle to enhance
