Location
This photo was taken on the South Island of New Zealand, it's a well know spot and a draw for photographers. They are called the Moeraki Boulders and are sign posted of Route 1.Time
We arrived at just after 8 having travelled down the coast the night before, I knew it would be popular and would get busy quick and I wasn't wrong...By the time we left a couple of hours later you couldn't get a shot of the boulders without at least 20 other people being in the frame.Lighting
It was quite an overcast day there had been no stunning sunrise to record but I thought black & white would really do it more justice, the light was still building but so was the amount of people so it was a case of patients. It is an amazing place the boulders kind of make me think of giant eggs!Equipment
This was shot on a Canon 6D with tripod, cable release and a neutral density filter to try and slow the water down just a touch.Inspiration
I had seen lots of images of these boulders and knew as we travelled around New Zealand it had to be one of the must do shots. The sunrise hadn't been great but I still liked the contrast in the sky with the boulders just sitting in the water like they had been there since the beginning of time! I took lots of images both of the groups of boulders plus the ones on there own. It truly is a magical place and I can't wait to go back.Editing
I tend to do most of my editing in Lightroom, I used a pre-set as a start point then added more contrast and shadows to build up the sense of feeling I wanted. Then I lightened parts with a select radial filter to add a bit more depth. In my camera bag
Normally I have my Canon 6D along with my 16-35 and 24-105 lens. Also a selection of Lee filters, remote and cloths. I do seem to carry quite a bit of kit round with me but that seems to come from my inability to make a decision on what to leave behind!Feedback
The Moeraki Boulders are an amazing sight and you really do need to give them more time than I was able, definitely get there early if you want the place to yourself as it is extremely popular with coach loads of tourists turning up!
