Behind The Lens

Location

I took this in my living room. I had just received a few Hydrangea's from my sister for our "kitchen warming" party. The minute everyone left, I got my camera out and did a photo shoot. I Love macro photography, and couldn't let this opportunity pass!

Time

This was taken in the early evening. I wanted to practice with no flash inside the house, so I got my tripod out and went to work. I had this all over the living room in different places.

Lighting

The lighting was just normal inside lighting. I did not have any lamps on, as I wanted to try a long exposure to avoid flash.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon 7D on a tripod. I used my Caonon 100mm lens. 200 ISO, F11 for 13 seconds. That's it!

Inspiration

I am so intrigued with up close photography. When looking through my macro lens, it's like an entire different world emerges. You can see detail that you would not normally see. It is truly amazing what you can see up close and personal like that! I also wanted a shot for the "Rule of Thirds in Macro" that was going on at the time.

Editing

Post processing wise, I added a bit of contrast and sharpened it a bit. It was really pretty good straight out of the camera, so I was pleased I didn't really have to do much. I also cropped it a bit to be perfect for the rule of thirds.

In my camera bag

Well, obviously, I always have my 7D with me, although someday I would just Love to upgrade to a 5D Mark III. I always have my 100mm and my 24-105mm. I make sure I always have my remote trigger and a lot of extra cards!

Feedback

Practice a lot! With macro, I find if I'm not holding the camera at the exact correct angle, especially when shooting wide open, that you can miss the focus very easily! The focal range is quite tiny when you shoot so open, but it's totally worth the patience and effort to experiment with the correct placement of the lens.
