Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Yosemite Valley. I'm lucky enough to live within a couple hours of Yosemite National Park and I take complete advantage of it, usually going at least once a month.

Time

This shot was taken just before 6 am on April 30th 2016. I woke up just before 4 am that morning to meet up with my friend and fellow photographer and make it to Yosemite Valley in time for the sunrise. We ended up spending most of the day there shooting all over the park.

Lighting

I wanted to get there early to capture the soft morning light and give the image a serene and peaceful feeling.

Equipment

This photo was shot using a Canon 5D Mark III with a Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L USM lens. I set it up on a Mefoto Roadtrip tripod and took a .5 sec exposure at f/22.

Inspiration

I love Yosemite. I could go there a million times and never run out of things to shoot. On this day we had actually planned on going straight to Mirror Lake for sunrise, but as we drove by Yosemite Fall we deiced that this was worth stopping for.

Editing

I try to keep my processing to a minimum most of the time. For this image I used Lightroom to do some color correction and tonal adjustments. I then took it into Photoshop and used a Nik Collection layer to do some contrast and white balance adjustments. I also do a high pass filter to sharpen the image. I used dodge and burn layers, which is something I don't normal do, to bring out the contrast in the wooden pathway. Once Im done in Photoshop I bring it back to Lightroom for any final tuning it may need before I export the finished image.

In my camera bag

First lets start with the bag. I use a Brevite camera bag that I really like. It looks great and it has a removable protective insert, and top pocket that can be used to car books or other gear, a laptop sleeve, and tripod holder. As far as gear goes, I use a Canon 5D Mark III for most of my photography. I also carry a Canon EOS A2 for those times when I want to shoot film. My go to lens is the Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L USM, it takes sharp images, its pretty versatile, and well built, plus the viewpoint you get from a 16mm lens can create some really powerful images. I also carry a Canon 24-70mm f/4 IS USM and a Canon 50mm f/1.8 II.

Feedback

The hardest part of capturing images in Yosemite Valley is the crowds. If you really want to capture good landscape images plan you visit when tourism will be at a low; that means no holidays, and no weekends. Other than that it all depends on what you want to capture. Yosemite offers something different all year round, whether its the gushing waterfalls of spring or the snow covered landscape of winter, you'll never be disappointed.
