Not a fan of selfies, A self portrait indeed. You obviously put some time and effort into creating this image. It is amazing ! The color of your hair and eyes are absolutely gorgeous . I love the Depth of field leading directly to your pupils below arched eyebrows. You definitely deserve all the recognition you have received, congrats ! Cheers, -F

Beautiful! I love the colors and the composition! The lighting is perfect, and I like how your fingers direct the viewers' eyes straight to yours. Fantastic job!

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a small home studio I set up while I was in Wheat Ridge Co. This was the year I was going back and forth between California and Colorado pretty frequently. We were living in California and my husband was deployed. My daughter and I would visit family in Colorado while he was away. We were staying for a few months so I brought my lights, and my background stand with me. The background I made myself by painting a canvas sheet I bought from homedepot. Studio work really is a favorite of mine because I feel like I have more control over the image.

Time

I don't remember the time of day but I do know it was taken in March, 2014.

Lighting

I used one light about 45 degrees to the left of my camera. The light had a 45" silver PLM with a diffuser.

Equipment

This was taken with my Canon 5D Mark ii, 90mm lens, and then all of that was connected to a shutter release, and my computer running Lightroom.

Inspiration

A lot of people think that the movie Tangled inspired me, but honestly I was taking a self portraits about how I wanted to hide in my hair. I had been growing it out after dying it and chopping it off for so many years, I liked the idea of featuring my natural hair in the portrait. It was long and I finally thought it was pretty just how it was. What's funny is I didn't connect the dots until I showed one of my friends and she immediately says "it looks like Tangled!". I chuckle at it, and I don't mind if people make that connection. It was a good movie.

Editing

There is a lot of post processing. I really enjoy photoshop and I like to try to challenge myself with projects. This is probably a combination of 6 or 7 photos that I pieced together using the transformation tool and layer masks, after that it was color correction, contrast, and getting the right red tone for the hair. I have a short video I posted on Instagram (@faithklefever) May 25 2015 that shows each photoshop layer and the construction of the image.

In my camera bag

I have my Canon 5D Mark ii, Sigma 70-200mm 2.8, Canon 90mm TS-E 2.8, Yongnuo 35mm 2.0, an old Sears 135mm 2.8 lens with an adapter for my camera, and then an old Vivitar 28mm 2.8 lens that uses the same adaptor. Some people might wonder about the old manual lens, but they work great for me and they are cheap. I also have a set of Vivitar macro extension tubes, these are so much fun to play with if you enjoy shooting macro but don't have the money for a proper macro lens. You can usually find sync chords, batteries, some aspirin and sugary treats in there too. My bag itself is an Amazon Basics camera bag. I received it as a gift from another photographer friend about 3 years ago and it is the best bag I have. My studio lighting bag consists of three alien bee's, two PLMs, some shoot through diffusers, two strip boxes, and then stands for lights, and stands for backdrops. I also keep my two Yongnuo speed lights, a couple flashlights and a reflector in there as well. It's a big bag.

Feedback

Self portraits are really fantastic and help you grow as a photographer. You are learning two sides of the camera at the same time, and this practice makes it easier when working models or clients. Also, experiment! You can make magic happen with your camera and a digital darkroom if you take the time to learn how to use the tools and programs.
