Location
This photo was taken from my yard, looking toward the sunset behind my neighbor's house. It is from a rural area in Ohio.Time
I remember this photo in particular because I was driving home one evening and I could see that the sky was changing quickly and starting to form some really interesting clouds highlighted by amazing color combinations. I remember driving probably faster than I should have, just so I could make it home in time to get my UAS in the air and capture it. I took many photographs that evening including a couple of panoramas but this one is still one of my all time favorite photos.Lighting
I think that with this photograph, the lighting is the soul. The only lightning in this picture came from sun itself. The combination of clouds, angle, etc. created a beautiful sea of pinks and purples that were a joy to try and capture.Equipment
My photographs are almost all acquired with the use of a Phantom 3 Professional UAS. Sometimes I use ND filters for videography but only the standard UV filter for my aerial photography.Inspiration
During that drive home I was in awe of the colors that were forming. I knew how they were making me feel at that moment with the moods and tones. They put my in a wonderful place that evening and I wanted to do my best to capture that same feeling for others to be able to experience.Editing
I do most of my post processing in Adobe Photoshop CC. I also use the Nik software suite quite a bit. Most of my shots are 5 shot AEBs that I combine using HDR Efex Pro 2. I will generally then use Color Efex for overall color balance and contrast. Viveza is my next stop for spot corrections and to create mood where I want it. I'll use it to highlight areas or adjust color tones. Often times I'll go back and forth between the two several times until I get something that I'm happy with. I also use Sharpener Pro to give a little more detail and Dfine to clean up any graininess. In my camera bag
Since I'm more of an aerial photographer than a land photographer, my "bag" is fairly limited. I use my Phantom 3 Professional and several Snake River Prototyping ND filters (8, 16/8 graduated, 16).Feedback
The thing that I love about photography is that we are all constantly learning, both from our own experiences, as well as the experiences of others. There's always a new angle or technique. There's an endless stream of possible moods that can be captured. You could take a photograph that could instantly calm the masses, just by them viewing it. You could capture an image that could instantly enrage just as easily. For me, I am always out looking for the mood. What photograph can I take that will make someone feel something. Personally, I lean toward the calming, peaceful effect... I would say to always be on the lookout for that "awe" shot. I was able to get this one because I recognized that this moment was coming soon and I did all I could to get in the right place to be able to capture it. That's not always possible but when it is...capitalize on it. You'll be amazed at how many great photographs you will take.
