Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Maunalua Bay in Oahu, Hawaii during a drift dive (just go with the current), so the exact position in the bay is hard to pinpoint in retrospect.

Time

I believe the time of day was quite early in the morning.

Lighting

This photo has only natural lighting.

Equipment

I used a simple point and shoot. Sony DSC W300

Inspiration

I've been teaching scuba diving for many many years and noticed that whenever I don't bring a camera the most wonderful sea creatures show up and I can only take mental pictures ( I usually press my nose as a shutter :)), so I made a habit of just always bring a simple small underwater camera on every dive. This particular photo I took after I spotted the Eagle Ray in the distance and lured it over by digging in the sand myself, making the curious creature believe I found some great snacks, the ray swam right up to me and started digging as well, it was so close that if I reached out my hand I could've touched it.

Editing

I upped the brightness and contrast a bit to make the white and black pop a bit more.

In my camera bag

I usually dive with a GoPro or Sony DSC W300 point and shoot

Feedback

Try not to swim after sea creatures, a lot of them are quite curious and will come check you out if you sit still and/or pose no threat. That way you can get the shot from the front or the side instead of the ass of a fleeing animal.
