This photo was taken in my living room. I am a self taught photographer and and constantly trying to improve my understanding of light and how to use it. Because I don't have a studio or lighting equipment I am trying different ways to get the look I am after.Time
My daughter was trying on some lipstick to wear for a sports carnival of all things. She is not a make up style of girl at all, and I had to grab the opportunity to photograph her . Because it was mid afternoon (2pm) I opted for photographing her indoors.Lighting
This image was taken in the afternoon and there was a reasonable amount of indirect light coming in from 2 large windows in front and from the right of the model. However that wasn't enough to produce the sculpting on the face that I was after. I added an off camera flash to the subjects rightEquipment
This was shot with a Canon 7D, EF100mm f/2.8L, on a tripod with an off camera 580EXII speedlight. I attached a Gary Fong lightsphere to the flash to soften the light.Inspiration
My daughters are growing up so quickly and I want them to have a record of how beautiful and strong they are. Most of the images I have are sporting shots and generally they refuse to sit for me. This was one of the odd occasions when she agreed to let me take her image. It would be wonderful if this was a starting point to take more photos of people showing their inner beauty without distractions.Editing
The processing in this shot was minimal. A little brightening of her eyes and I fixed up a smear of lipstick from near her mouth. Some adjustments to contrast and the addition of a vignette completed the processing. In my camera bag
I have recently bought myself a Canon 5DIII and am over the moon with it. My favourite lens is the EF100mm f/2.8L. On a general outing I also take 24-105mm and a 70-300mm zoom, tripod and flash.Feedback
The best advice I can give is to have an idea of what you want from the image. As am learning the craft I am very conscious about trying to have the light work for me. Paying close attention to the direction and quality of the main light source is key. Having the camera on a tripod and using a remote shutter release allowed me to make adjustments easily. It is important to choose aperture carefully. I used f5.6 so both eyes were in focus. My third concern was ensuring that there were no harsh shadows from the flash on the background.
