this could be interesting as TWO framed prints; one above the other, possibly using only the image left of the trees.

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Yosemite National Park, California

Time

This was early afternoon, probably around 2:00. We were waiting for the right time to photograph Horsetail Falls, as it was the right time of year (February). We were killing time and decided to try to get a picture of Yosemite Falls. It turned out to be a good decision as the falls were running very heavy.

Lighting

We picked a 3-day window when the lighting was to be right for Horsetail Falls. I didn't plan on shooting these falls originally. I maneuvered around quite a bit and took several shots when I suddenly saw the small rainbow. The trail is lined with trees, so trying to keep the rainbow and have the lighting hit the falls just right was tricky. I used an iphone app called Yosemite Photo Guide to confirm that this was the best time to take advantage of the afternoon lighting.

Equipment

I use a Nikon D-800. It is loaded with two 64gb memory cards. I shoot both in Raw and jpg fine. My lens was a Nikkor 28-300 mm. My current tripod of choice is a Manfrotto with a ball head and quick release. Because it is made of aluminum it's not the lightest tripod on the market, but is very solid.

Inspiration

Yosemite is a photographer's candy store. Between wildlife and iconic vistas its hard not to take advantage of a photo opportunity like this. California has been in a 4-year drought, so until this year the falls were only a trickle, so I was excited to see this much water.

Editing

I shoot in raw so I use Lightroom for any necessary color or clarity correction and then move into Photoshop for cropping, etc.

In my camera bag

I carry two camera bodies. My main camera is a Nikon D-800 and the backup is either a D-200 or D2X if I need speed. My normal lenses are a Nikkor 17-35mm, 24-300mm, and a 105mm macro.

Feedback

Advance planning for capturing something like this is necessary since drought conditions will impact the amount water present. The app mentioned above is very helpful since it will tell you when the best times to shoot as well as the best locations to shoot from. As with any landscape photography a bit of patience, not to mention some luck, is necessary especially if you are trying to capture a scene where there are a lot of tourists lingering about.
