This was taken from Mallory Square in Key West Florida during the sunset festival.Time
Taken just before sunset, this was my favorite picture from the two sunsets I saw while in Key West. It was the only on from the trip that I actually had printed and framed.Lighting
Lighting was tricky since I was looking directly into the sun. Unfortunately I didn't have a tripod with me to do HDR and balance out the bright sun vs the sailboat so I lightened up the sailboat in post processing.Equipment
I took this with a Canon 70D using a Tamron 16-300 Di II VC lens.Inspiration
Key West is a great place for sunsets since they require any cruise ships to be gone well before sundown so there is nothing blocking the view. I liked the combination of the sailboaters watching the sunset with the seagulls flying past them.Editing
Since I was holding the camera by hand, I couldn't use HDR so I ended up taking an average exposure then darkening the sun a bit while lightening the sailboat so it wasn't completely silhouetted. I also removed a lens flare spot near the mast of the sailboat that almost looked like a second sun. Unfortunately at the same time the seagulls flew across the scene, a speedboat did too so I used Lightroom's spot removal tool to remove that too.In my camera bag
In addition to my Canon 70D, when traveling I bring my Tamron 16-300mm Di II VC f3.5-6.3, Canon 50mm f1.8, and Tamron 24-70mm Di VC f2.8 lens plus UV and CP filters. Since I took this picture I now have a MePhoto tripod that I can travel with. The rest of my bag contains a Canon 430Ex II flash, lens cleaning supplies, and lots of spare SD cards.Feedback
When in Key West plan on going to the sunset festival every night. Even if the day is overcast, the sun may peek through at the last minute. Even if you catch a sunset one night, the next one will be different - different cloud configurations, birds, boats, colors. Also get there about an hour before sunset to get a good spot along the pier - its very popular so gets crowded quickly.
