Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Halifax, NC on some farm land.

Time

This was taken first thing in the morning! To be honest, it was super cold and we were up early just to catch this shot. Just as we were leaving, it started to snow!

Lighting

I'm a natural light photographer myself. However, being first thing in the morning (and cloudy) it was not as light as I would have liked for it to be. However, my 1.2 lens and a higher ISO (1000) were super helpful. I also use post processing to help achieve the look I want. I used Lightroom for basic edits like exposure, highlighting, etc, and then I used Photoshop CC to add a little orange glow in the image.

Equipment

I used my Canon 5D Mark III, 85mm 1.2, and a camouflaged blind.

Inspiration

My fiancé and I love nature. We both hunt, fish, and just spend a lot of time outdoors, he more so than I. So we often love to combine our two favorite things: nature and photography. Plus, red foxes are such beautiful animals, who wouldn't want a picture of one. To catch one in a shot with fall colors still on the ground was pretty crazy!

Editing

Simple changes like cropping, exposure, and warmth were taken care of in Lightroom. However, I also used Photoshop to really give it the wow-factor I wanted. I added my favorite filters before further adding more warmth, pop of color, and that orange hue to give a backlit look.

In my camera bag

I'm pretty glued to my 85mm on my MK III.... It never comes off the body. I also carry a 70-200mm 2.0 and a 24-70 for long and wide shots.

Feedback

Be patient! I can't tell you how many years I waited to get this kind of shot or how many times I had to get up super early to be there in time. I'm sure any seasoned nature photographer will tell you that you have to work around nature. It does not work around you! Also, you need good camo. A blind, camo clothing, black face paint, etc. Animals know you're there so you need to be pretty disguised. Even more so, you need to be quiet. Most animals have hearing WAY better than humans and they hear every little thing. So find a good spot and stay put and wait for them to come along. They may even stop and pose if you're lucky!
