Location
I woke up one morning in the early springtime, just before sunrise, and I could see the sky was already on fire from my bedroom window. So I jumped out of bed, threw on some clothes, grabbed my camera, and jumped in my car and drove down to the closest beach (Mahoney's Beach in Antigonish, Nova Scotia).Time
It was around 5:30-6 a.m. when I got to the beach and I had the whole place to myself to capture the beauty of the icebergs floating in the serenely still waters that mirrored the amazing colours, textures, and cloud formations perfectly in those fleeting moments before the actual sunrise.Lighting
The deepest, brightest colours with the best contrast appear in the sky just before the sun comes up. This is especially true when taking pictures over water as the brightness of the sun is doubled as a result of the reflections off the water.Equipment
This was shot with a Sony DSC-WX80, no flash, no tripod. Aperature: ƒ/3.3 Focal Length: 4.5 mm Exposure Time: 1/40 ISO: 100Inspiration
Just in the right place at the right time...call it a feeling or a hunch, but the strange glow coming through my bedroom window when I woke up was enough to get me out of bed and head to the beach as fast as I could. I was more than fortunate and was rewarded with about a dozen shots that still rank among some of my best ever.Editing
I used photoshop CS4 to adjust the brightness/contrast and levels to make the icebergs pop as they were dark and with their details hidden by their own shadowsIn my camera bag
GoPro Hero 3 Canon Digital Elph Sony SD Video Camera Sony DSC-WX80 and a wide-angle/fish-eye lens with homemade adapter so I can use it with all 4 camerasFeedback
1. Trust your gut instincts 2. The early bird gets the worm 3. The magic happens just before the sun comes up and just after the sun goes down
