Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at the Calgary zoo on January 25, 2015.

Time

I went to the zoo with my sister and nieces. I was really excited to test out my new camera that my husband had just gotten me for Christmas. We were passing the tiger enclosure when this tiger decided he wanted to put on a show. He was walking around growling. It was right near his dinner time (5:00pm) so maybe he was excited of letting everyone know he was hungry..

Lighting

There is nothing to amazing about the lighting in this photo. It was taken in natural light through the glass viewing area at the zoo.

Equipment

This was taken with a Nikon D7100. The lens was a Nikkor 18-300mm at 180mm zoom. f/5, 1/250sec, ISO-800 (No flash or Tripod)

Inspiration

I had just gotten a new camera for Christmas and was really excited to test it out. SO my sister, nieces and i went to spend a day at the Calgary zoo. As we passed the tiger enclosure this tiger decided he wanted to put on a show. Maybe he was hunger or just in a bad mood. I was so excited that i started taking photo after photo and forgot to take off my lens cap- OOPS! I was super lucky that i noticed and was able to get this photo.

Editing

The only post-proccessing i did with this photo was to make the eyes a little more yellow. I used Pic-Monkey and the 'vampire editing tool.

In my camera bag

I have my Nikon D7100 and three lens in my bag. I also have my battery charger, a lens cleaner and sometimes my tripod.

Feedback

When photographing animals (wildlife or pets) be prepared to get a little dirty. The best photos of animals usually focus on their eyes- so you might have to get down on their level. Take lots and lots of photos and don't worry about only getting 1 decent image out of 100 (or 1000). I think t animals are some of the best subjects because there is so much mystery to what is behind their eyes and expressions. I've seen genuine curiosity and absolute indifference.
