Behind The Lens

Location

I am a self taught photograher. I am originally from Manhattan then moved to Brooklyn, Park Slope. This was taken in Brooklyn on a ledge facing my window. This was taken in natural lighting with stron sun exposure. I used a black fur pelt and the sun was streaming through the window. I used my very first digital camera I purchased at Costco, a Nikon D90 and used I believe a Nikon lens 85mm on a tripod. During this time in my life I was quite sad as I had lost my spouse of 18 years. I lost everything, my home, my finances and had to live in a 23'x10' room back in my mom's home. Life was crammed and difficult. This calla along with my other callas photograhed which are white callas, helped me express my sadness, yet at the same time, the birthing of something spectacular inside of me. I found my passion of long ago that had been shelved because life was happening. I ended up using this photograph during the holiday season of Christmas. For me life was blossoming and opening up to allow sun, color, laughter, and joy back into my life. Life was happening in a different norm for me.

Time

This photo was taken mid day when the sun is at its highest and strongest.

Lighting

Although mid day is the strongest part of the day to shoot w/sun, I found that light worked in perfect alliance with this deep red color.

Equipment

I used Nikon's D90 with a Nikon lens 85mm ISO 200 F32 no flash. I used a black fur pelt and the sun was streaming through the window. I used my very first digital camera I purchased at Costco, a Nikon D90 and used I believe a Nikon lens 85mm on a tripod.

Inspiration

Editing

I did crop the photo some. . .otherwise it's pretty much out of camera finished.

In my camera bag

I normally carry a wide angle of 24mm and 105 lens; batteries fully charged for camera; an extra SD/CF card and that's about it.

Feedback

Jump in and test out different shot w/strong light and adjusting your aperture to where you it feels right for you. I love dark backgrounds and lots of negative space. Many feel negative space is wasted but I don't. Place your flower(s) where you find it interesting and just shoot. Pixels are free. . .
