Behind The Lens

Location

This is the Gable House just outside Toppenish, Washington. Sometimes called the Stage Coach House.

Time

This was taken during summer around midnight. It was beautifully warm and the crickets were going nuts. The grass was up to my chest.

Lighting

I used my small head lamp to light up the house during while taking the exposure for the milkyway. Just a quick light and then off again so as not to blow out the building during the exposure.

Equipment

I shot with my tripod, and my Nikon D7100, using my Tokina 11-16mm lens at 11mm.

Inspiration

I just love the old buildings and I love the milkyway. Both favorites of mine to shoot anytime.

Editing

Yes, I used lightroom to adjust my white balance between the sky and the foreground for a more balanced color, increased my white for the stars and a little contrast and vibrance.

In my camera bag

Oh my I have a lot of gear in my bag. You just never know what you will come across and want to photography. The main items are: Nikon D600, Nikon 50mm, Tamron 150-600mm, Rokinon 14mm, Tokina 11-16mm, Minolta 58mm with nikon adapter (completely manual), head lamps for light painting, extra batteries for my camera, wireless intervalometer remote, step up adapter rings for filters, ND Grad Filters square, 10 ND filter, polarizer filters, lens cleaning clothes (Lots), 90 degree eyepiece attachment, Vixen Polarie Star Tracker and mount.

Feedback

Tripod!!! Tripod is the #1 thing you need for getting the stars. After that I would recommend a remote or use the timer on your camera. Learn how to use your camera in manual mode. Get comfortable changing your ISO and F stop (aperture) settings. A typical shot like this have settings of: ISO 3200, f 1.8 for 30 seconds. But it is all dependent on the lens you are using. The wider the f stop on your lens the better but not necessary at all to get star shots. And last, but sometimes first, HAVE FUN! Enjoy your shots.
