Behind The Lens

Location

This is the Portland Head Lighthouse in Portland Maine. I took the shot from the top deck of a cruise ship going into Portland.

Time

This was taken just before sunrise.

Lighting

This was just prior to sunrise so there was no harsh light involved.

Equipment

Nikon P510 hand held.

Inspiration

Having taken pictures of the lighthouse from land I knew I wanted to try to get a shot from the water. I also knew that at that time the light would still be on and was hoping to capture it flashing.

Editing

I lightened the photo and adjusted the contrast because it was a little dark. I had set the shot slightly under exposed so the flash of the light would not be too over exposed.

In my camera bag

Nikon P510

Feedback

To catch a lighthouse with the light on you need to get up early and be there before sunrise. You could also go at sunset as they turn the light on. Timing is important as well. Although you can shot multiple images it helps if you have some idea of when to shot. Many lights will show as small flash just as it is coming around. Using this clue you will have a better chance to capture the light as it flashes.
