Location
I took it on a friends patio while on a photography holiday in canada, my partner found the mantis and we did a photo shoot.Time
It was about 5pm so the sun was getting lower in the sky and the light was softer.Lighting
As the light was softer at that time if day it seemed a perfect time to use that backlight to get some silhouette shots.Equipment
It was shot with a nikon D5300 with a sigma 105mm f2.8 macro in manual focus and exposure so I had control of the exposure I wanted. The shot was handheld with my left hand as the mantis was on my right hand, a bit awkward but it worked.Inspiration
The softer evening light was the inspiration to do a silhouette, just had to find a good angle to take the shot.Editing
A very small post process edit was done, small amount of contrast was added and that was it.In my camera bag
I always have a full bag with me always, weather at work or out and about, you never know!! I have two D5300's, a nikon 18-55mm, nikon 55-300mm, sigma 10-20mm, sigma 105mm f2.8 macro, sigma 300mm f2.8 prime, lensbaby fisheye, a X2 and a x1.4 kenko teleconverter and the usual other small nd filters and bits.Feedback
One bit of advice I will say is really pay attention to light level and what is in the background, also try different angles, low angle up shots give good results.
