Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken after attending a friends wedding Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I had spent three days attending the wedding festivities and hadn't done much in the way of photography. It was my final full day in the city and I made the most of it by walking around the Petronas towers, shooting images from various perspectives.

Time

As you can see on the tower clock in the image, the time was 7:31pm. It was late December in Malaysia where the time of sunset doesn't vary much between seasons. The sun had already set and I was getting ready to call it a day and head back to the hotel.

Lighting

It was a slightly windy and overcast day with low lying clouds that would occasionally obscure the top of the towers. I was shooting bracketed images for HDR processign so I was more concerned with movement, however, the bright lights from the towers and surrounding city provided ample amount of light.

Equipment

I shot a series of seven bracketed images one stop apart from a tripod with a Canon 5D MarkIII and Carl Zeis 15mm f 2.8 wide angle lens.

Inspiration

I try to shoot popular landmarks when visiting different places and the Petronas Towers fit the bill. I was looking for an interesting composition and had captured a few already. I wanted to have the towers as the focal point with the activity the fountains provided complimenting them and the bridge in the center of the park provided an ideal location for this.

Editing

Yes, I always shoot in RAW format and process my images using my own creativity. For this I used an HDR post processing program in order to compile seven images into the final product.

In my camera bag

I generally carry my Cannon 5DIII with three or four prime or telephoto lenses ranging out to either 100mm or 400mm depending on where I am and what I want to shoot. I also will take a tripod if I'm going to be out in low light, and a remote shutter switch.

Feedback

A tripod is almost essential for capturing bracketed shots, however, newer HDR software may be changing that. Traveling around a large city like Kuala Lumpur can be intimidating but I found the people to be friendly and acceptive to photographers. The park on the southern side of the towers offered a great location to practice different techniques with little fear for interference or obstruction. In all it was a great, relaxing day of exploring and pursuing my favorite hobby.
