Location
This is a long exposure of Banjhakri Falls near Gangtok, which is the capital of the Indian state of Sikkim high in the Hamalayan foothills.Time
It was late in the day and beginning to rain lightly when I set up my tripod.Lighting
It was heavily overcast, which meant I exposed the image for longer than I might otherwise have done. The effect was to make the waterfall seem like a ray of light emerging from the jungle at the top, lending it a mystical dimension.Equipment
Shot with a Pentax K30 through a Sigma 18-200mm DC 1:3.5-6.3II HSM lens with a Hoya ND1000 filter. Approximately 60sec @ f11, iso100Inspiration
This was my first visit to the Himalayas and I was looking for a full range of scenic shots - from wide panoramas of the imposing Kangchenjunga Range to the most intimate of landscapes. I also spent a lot of time shooting street portraits...the colourful national costumes and exotic features of the ethnic populations were endlessly fascinating!Editing
Not a lot of post processsing: a little dodging and burning to enhance the mood and a few tiny tweaks in a selective colour layer to tighten the contrast. In my camera bag
I try to travel light, so the staples in my backpack include my trusty K30/Sigma 18-200mm combo capturing to a SanDisk Extreme Pro card, a Sigma 28-80 for macro; a Lumix TZ30 point-and-shoot; a 3LT tripod called Brian, a mini tripod, a cable release and a remote control; a Hoya ND1000 filter, lots of spare batteries and a few spare cards. I back up on to a laptop and external HD after every shootFeedback
Look left when everyone else is looking right, look up when they're looking down and look forward when they're looking back. Always carry an ND filter, a tripod and preferably a cable release. Be prepared to go anywhere and do anything to get the shot you want - and be patient!!
