Behind The Lens

Location

I was at a small park and walking trail that my university had for trail running and walking uses.

Time

This was right after my classes so somewhere in the late afternoon in the winter. It doesn't snow but the trees still lose their leaves.

Lighting

This was just natural lighting from the sun. The way it his the cardinal and showed contrast the the hibernating trees was perfect.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon Rebel T3 with a standard 18 - 250 lens kit. No filters were used on the lens itself.

Inspiration

A friend of mine and I were having a nature photography day that we had planned, but didn't expect a whole lot. When I was looking through the trees and saw this bright red cardinal among the brown of the trees, I knew I had to catch it.

Editing

I used lightroom to play with the histogram and make it more even in the shadows and highlights along with brightness and contrast. I try not to play too much with post processing.

In my camera bag

Things have changed from this time, I have a bigger bag, more equipment, and a different camera. I now use a Canon Rebel T6i and have both standard lens kits along with a wide angle and a 50 mil pancake lens. I also have artsy star filters along with a polarizer, neutral density, UV for lens protection, and a gradient filter. I carry both my batteries and the charger with me.

Feedback

Patience. I caught this image out of luck and patience. I've learned that with opportunities like this one, you can't just give up if you dont see anything within the first 10 minutes. Give it time.
