Location
The photo was taken on the Plaza at the annual Fiestas de Santa Fe, a 300 year old event. I saw "Doc" on the street earlier, among the crowd. I asked if I could take his photo when we both happened to walk into the same coffee shop. I later learned he is a local icon who has occupied the same spot on the street for the past 53 years. A part-time local historian and tour guide, his personal story also includes residence in a teepee with his wife in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains on the outskirts of town.Time

The location was a covered sidewalk in the shade across from the open Plaza. I bounced light off the wood beam ceiling with an AD360 portable strobe.Equipment
This was shot with a Canon 7D and 17-40mm f/4L. Godox AD360 strobe with reflector.Inspiration
The previous day I visited Santa Fe museums and art galleries while absorbing a broad mix of native, historical and contemporary culture. One exhibit at the New Mexico Museum of Art featured local black and white photography. It had impact and no doubt was still processing in my mind.Editing
The raw image was taken into Lightroom for evaluation and global adjustments. I then used Photoshop for dodging and burning. Nik Collection's Viveza and Color Efex Pro were used to improve contrast, extract detail and add a vignette. Manual black and white conversion was completed in Photoshop. In my camera bag
I currently carry a R5 or 5DIV, but at the time used a 7D for travel. My lenses change frequently, but I plan ahead to minimize the load. Better and fewer glass for the road is ideal for me. I rarely take more than two lenses even when on assignment. Lighting and modifiers are a whole different matter requiring their own cases.Feedback
Study the environment. Study the subject. Create a plan and then act spontaneously.
