Location
I took this photo in Brantôme in Périgord, France. As a French teacher in a prestigious private girls school in Australia, I used to take the girls on an exchange with a school in nearby, Angoulême. A highlight was always a morning excursion to Brantôme, an interesting ancient village through which runs an old pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela.Time
The photo was taken at about 10.30 on a very cold September morning in 2006. Every year I would visit this village at about the same time in late September and every year, except this one, all the photos are of a clear blue sky. On this occasion the sun was too weak to lift the mist which made the abbey look more natural.Lighting
Filming into the light seemed to soften the effect of the mist even more. The low light also took the sharpness from both the Abbey walls and the reflections in the water making it look more in keeping with its age.Equipment
I just had a LUMIX camera the size of a credit card.Inspiration
The weather was so unlike the usual autumnal clear blue sky with sharp shadows that I saw the very familiar view from a different perspective.Editing
I didn’t process the photo at all.In my camera bag
I usually have a Pentax camera with a zoom lens, spare battery, spare SD card and mini tripod.Feedback
I think this was just a lucky shot. I didn’t have my SLR camera with me. I often don’t because of the weight but photography is also about opportunity and rather than miss these special opportunities I often use my iPhone.
