This photo was taken in the driveway of the building where I used to live, in Hollywood, CA.Time
This was mid-late afternoon. This couple of friends dropped by to say hello, and I had just bought a new lens, so we decided to have an impromptu little session right then and there!Lighting
They are one of the cutest couples I've ever known, and they were obviously very much in love (still are.. and they're married now!), and I wanted the light to match this vibe, so it had to be very soft. The driveway provided us with a nice open shadow, and the building right in front had a white wall bouncing the afternoon sunlight right back at us.Equipment
It was my first camera, a Canon Rebel XT (aka Canon 350D), with a Canon 50mm f/1.8 lens.Inspiration
It was mostly spontaneous, but I have to say that LOVE inspired me! Again, they were so much in love that you could see it in every move they made, in every eye contact, in every touch. I did direct them a bit, but it was mostly minor adjustments to what they were already doing.Editing
Yes, I adjusted a bit the exposure and converted to black and white on Lightroom, then took it to Photoshop to correct some minor skin, hair and other small details, like parts of the wall.In my camera bag
Normally my Canon 60D, a Canon 50mm f/1.8, Tamron 28-70mm f/2.8, Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 and a Sigma 15mm f/2.8 Fisheye. I might bring a Canon 420EX flash, but usually a 5-in-1 reflector is what I use.Feedback
Well, if you have such a beautiful moment just jumping at you, you essentially only have to point and shoot! I just made sure they were comfortable, so that their love would show naturally. Being in open shade made it even more flexible, since the light was so even that they could move freely and face any direction. Every now and then I'd tell them to "move that hand a little bit up", or "hold it like that", or "OH GOD, DO THAT AGAIN!", but it was mostly letting them be and capturing it.
