Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the shore of the Tramandaí Lagoon, in Imbé beach, shouthern Brazil. This place is one of my preferred ones as it is isolated (not too many people) and very close to the beach house. The sun set by the mountains in the backgroud, behind a farm of windmills.

Time

Sunset hour on this time of year is about 5:30 to 6:00 pm in south Brazil. I had to keep watch from 4:45 to 6:30 pm to get the best (on my point of view) shot

Lighting

The lighting is all natural, I just had the aperture reduced one stop

Equipment

I use mostly a Canon 60D, with the kit lens 18-135mm. In this photo the zoom was adjusted to 18 mm. A MeFoto Travelmate tripod with a ball head and spirit level was used for reducing shaking. Aperture was f/16 to increase DOF, ISO 100 to reduce noise, and speed 1/50 sec (because of the low light)

Inspiration

Any time of the year I am at the beach, I go to this place to take sunset photos. This day it was after a front of bad weather had passed, so I had an interesting sky to work with

Editing

A little post processing went on this one. A small crop to remove an anwanted structure by one of the edges that I had not seen on camera. Then some adjustments to the lighting, contrast and clarity (on Lightroom) nothing more than that. No software filters or anithing else for this photograph.

In my camera bag

What I carry on my bag will depend on what I'm set to do. For Landscape I always take my 18-135 (I know it is the kit lens, but I like it), a 24 mm prime (EF-S 24mm) and a EF 75-300mm. A pack of neutral density filters (ND2, ND4, ND6).

Feedback

My advice to those who want to capture any image (not just similar to this one) is first to scout the place (know were you want to be), get there early to set up and don't leave until the sun has gone down completely, be pacient (t might take a while for the shot in your mind to materialize) and be careful
