Behind The Lens
Location
The photo was taken in an events venue in the Philippines. This part of the facility had a semi-translucent acrylic roof, hence the diffused light.Time
The photo was shot shortly before noon. Not exactly the most ideal of times but again, thanks to the construction of the roof, the light was relatively well diffused.Lighting
I wanted to bring out all the details of the outfit, hence I had to ensure that I had very good lighting throughout. In addition to the diffused light coming filtering in from the roof above, I had someone holding a reflector to eliminate any shadows on the model's face.Equipment
This was shot using a Nikon D800, Nikon 85mm 1.4G and a Lastolite Trigrip reflector.Inspiration
A group of friends were invited to shoot some new creations created by a fashion designer. I was put in charge of leading a group on the shoot and setting up the lighting. To get this vantage point from above, I used a ladder to gain the perspective I wanted.Editing
For this photo, initial processing was done in Lightroom. I adjusted the white balance, exposure and tamed the highlights first. The photo was then exported to Adobe Photoshop to work on the skin and color grading. In my camera bag
I normally have at least two bodies on a shoot. I currently usually work with a Sony a7 and Sony a7R with an assortment of lenses such as a 16-35mm F4, 24-70mm F4, 55mm F1.8, 85mm F1.4 and 135 F1.8. I also pack a mix of flashes and studio strobes depending if the assignment requires it.Feedback
In portrait photography, just like other genres, quality of light is just as important as quantity. It took a few minutes to find a good location to position our model under our natural light source. Once there, do not be afraid to shoot from a different perspective to eliminate distractions present in the surrounding area. This is another reason I decided to shoot the model from above using the ladder. By shooting from this angle, I eliminated the presence of a lot of distracting elements that would have been present in the background had I been shooting from ground level.
