Behind The Lens

Location

I was walking through the fields of high grasses at Two Rivers Park in Little Rock Arkansas, on a hot humid early summer morning. This is a prime spot for deer and a variety of bird photos year round.

Time

This was taken very early in the day on a hot summer morning. As a teacher, off for the summer, I was actually late to get to the 'deer fields' and early feeding times by raptors and song birds. Around 8:30 am, with the ever present humidity haze rising I was seeing nothing but annoying biting flies and....these colorful but almost mechanical looking dragonflies.

Lighting

As stated previously, it was well after sunrise, so the golden glow and glare was mild, but the haze helped make the bokeh just right....after about a dozen attempts.

Equipment

This was shot on a hand held Nikon CoolPix P510, using the close up setting, although I had to try several times to get the desired shot due to auto focus.

Inspiration

I consider myself an opportunity wildlife/natural photographer. This means I seldom set out, to photograph any particular object. I wander around in woods, and fields enjoying nature, and capture the unusual, the unseen, and the beauty of the world. This particular photo allowed me to see and capture a dragonfly in great detail, the color, the texture, and the pose...it was just different

Editing

I only enhanced the contrast and sharpened the details a bit with Nikons ' view' processing tools

In my camera bag

I only have the Nikon CoolPix P510 and sometimes have a Manfredo collapsible monopod for distant wildlife or landscape shots

Feedback

Patience. With the natural world, you don't get to pose your subjects. Even if you are fortunate enough to know places to find your subjects, the background, the lighting, and the stillness of your subject are a lot about opportunity, and your patience and persistence as a photographer
