Behind The Lens
Location
Jacksonville Florida. Atlantic beach.Time
A few minutes after sunrise. I'd say 7:00 am. I started taking shots early that day before the sun was even out.Lighting
The Sun lights up the sky during sunrise in such an amazing way that catching what It does moments before and after is something we should all experience often. It has now become my favorite time of the day to shoot because of all the beautiful colors.Equipment
I used a gopro hero 3 silver. No tripod. I saw a large puddle of water and set the camera down behind it. Being low to the ground is a great vantage point when taking pictures of the sun rising. especially behind still water.Inspiration
I attempted capturing the sun rising not long before this in Homestead Florida at a Marina. It really was great, but I was unprepared and missed it by a few minutes. When I got back home to Jacksonville I didn't hesitate and took a trip to the beach at 5:30 am. I stayed until about 8:00. Getting there that early was good because I gave myself enough time to find a good spot.Editing
Out of all the shots I took that day this one was the one that really caught my attention. I brought down the temperature on the image to bring out the blues. I centerfocused the image and darkened the top and the bottom. Then ran it through an hdr nature filter. I also raised the contrast on the dog and his owners to sharpen their silhouettes. After all the photos I've take this is still my favorite. In my camera bag
I only carry my gopro when I go out. I don't have a bag yet. I really am looking forward on getting one in order to broaden my options. For now all I have is the one camera and small cleaning kit which is just a rag and a bottle of lens cleaner.Feedback
Well, I believe that the earlier the better. I woke up at 4:30 that day. I arrived at the location well before the sun came up and that is key in taking any photograph. Preparation is a must. Giving yourself room for errors and setbacks is important. You also have the time to decide on if the spot you picked out is right. You can take the time to set up in different spots before you decide what works best for you. Take as many pictures as you can. The more the better. You'll have The option of selecting the right one. Unexpected birds and bugs flying in the shot can ruin the image. The only other piece of advice I have is to keep cleaning supplies on hand. Clean your lens before, during and after your sessions.
