Location
I was trail running at Shakamkak State Park (near Jasonville, Indiana) when I noticed two adult barred owls in the trees overhead. I of course stopped to admire them, curious that they didn't fly away (they're usually quite shy!) I finally turned to continue my run, and just froze - this little guy was sitting on a fallen log next to the trail......... explains why the parents were hanging around!Time
This was taken mid-afternoon on May 18, 2015Lighting
I was fortunate to have such good light conditions for this; usually shooting at full zoom, and in the woods to boot, I struggle with slow shutter speeds. Being the time of year it was (mid-Spring) I think helped a lot, it wasn't as shady as it normally isEquipment
I shoot with a Fuji Finepix HS20. I hate tripods, lol - I guess I should try to be friends with them, but they are so confining..... I need to move around a lot while I'm shooting.Inspiration
I love wildlife and nature. To get to see a wild creature this close was an experience I'll always remember with a smileEditing
I didn't do much post processing on this one. I did some softening for depth of field, and a little sharpening to bring out the details in his feathers, etc. All processing was done in Photoshop CS4. Oh, and I guess I should add that I only shoot .jpeg (I know, I know - that's another photography no-no, lol)In my camera bag
What equipment do I have in my bag? I wish I had a bag, lol! On this day, the camera was actually in the car, 2 miles away. I begged the owl to please wait for me while I ran back to get it, and to my surprise, he was still there when I got back, completely exhausted and feeling like I was gonna have a heart attack, lol (running isn't my strong point!). No, all I have is the camera. Sometimes I bring an extra set of batteries. I have a 4gig card that is usually sufficient for what I need, whether I'm shooting stills, or video. I don't have any of the extra do-dads (filters, flashes, remotes, etc.) Although I think I would really like to have a neutral density filter for shooting sunsets or moving water........ maybe someday....... :)Feedback
When shooting wildlife, always be respectful of their space. They don't know that you don't mean them any harm.
