i took this photo in a French zoo called Beauval, its a great park where animal are kept then when its possible replaced in their natural habitat.Time
I love koaka bear and this one was so cute, so when i see him i couldn't resist so i come close and took this picture which i really love, he seems so calm and relax in his tree. The tree and his placement make a great composition.Lighting
The lighting was hard because in the zoo i couldn't actually control anything. and i had to shoot trought the glass so there was many many variables. it was quite hard.Equipment
I used my Nikon D3, shooting raw. at a f/5.6, ISO 200. i didn't have any tripod or anything so i actually use the back of my wheelchair to stay steady.Inspiration
I was visiting the zoo and shooting lots of animals and then i saw him just resting in his tree, sleeping after eating some and i find him so fine there that i couldn't just past him and not take this pictureEditing
I used lightroom and photoshop on this image not to do much but to remove some flare from the glass in front of him, boost a bit of the color and finally crop the image in square. In my camera bag
I have my Nikon D3 with my lens, my flash SB-900, my tripod ans some accessories for my flash and if needed some softbox depending on my goal for the shoot. i try to pack as light as i can because if i need to use my wheelchair its not really practical to bring alotFeedback
Well if you try to shoot in a zoo, first don't hesitate to try a lot of different position, point of view or else that for several reason, for the flare in the glass or if the animal move. For this specific image i was in my wheelchair so my point of view was way under everyone else, but was actually better and less flare. shoot raw to be able to manipulate the picture in post-production so you have more chance to achieve your goal. Don't be afraid to try lots of differents pictures and close up, because with animal you never know when you gonna take the best picture, unless its a koala who sleep really deep on his tree :-)
